Gin Manners: A Bottle Design That Transforms from Day to Night

Estudio Maba's Award-Winning Design Reflects the Dual Nature of Gin

Estudio Maba's design for the Gin Manners bottle is a unique blend of classic and contemporary elements. Drawing inspiration from traditional English perfumery and classic London Gin recipes, the design team gave these elements a personal interpretation to create a bottle that is both familiar and strikingly original.

The design's unique feature is its dual personality, reflecting the versatility of gin as a spirit that can be enjoyed in various settings - from a relaxed afternoon to a lively night at the disco. The bottle's appearance changes from day to night, revealing its wilder side under the glow of a black light. This transformation is a tribute to the respectful British manners and its energetic global rebellion movement: Punk.

The design process involved digital printing and flexography on Tintoretto Crystal Salt, silver foil stamping, and the use of luminescent ink. The team faced challenges in achieving the perfect balance between colour and luminescence under a black light, ensuring that the daytime colours did not interfere with the night-time version of the label. This required extensive testing and adaptation, as well as a careful selection of inks.

The result is a design that is not only visually appealing but also interactive, offering an evolved version of the product that engages the consumer. The bottle's transformation from polite Manners to its wilder face, No Manners, under a black light, embodies the dual nature of the brand and the spirit it represents.

The Gin Manners bottle design was recognized with the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that reflect extraordinary excellence and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
